Album Info:The Bay Coast Railroad (AAR reporting mark BCR) took over the Eastern Shore Railroad line from Pocomoke City, Maryland, to Norfolk, Virginia. A rail ferry service is used from Cape Charles, Virginia, to Little Creek in Virginia Beach, Virginia which is a 26 mile water route across the Chesapeake Bay. Tug boats are contracted to move the barge. This particular car float operation has been in continuous service since April 1885, and is thought to be the only remaining service of this type in the United States. The Bay Coast Railroad interchanges with Norfolk Southern Railway at both Norfolk, and Pocomoke City. Despite what you may find on the internet about the Bay Coast RR it has become the worst managed railroad since Penn Central! The state has given funding to repair tracks and maintain the railway line and the management makes no attempt to improve the poor and unsafe conditions of the railway. Update: As of May 2018 the BCR filed to discontinue operations as a common carrier railroad. The Buckingham Branch Railroad will take over operation of the Norfolk Division and the Delmarva Central will operate from Pocomoke City to Hallwood (14 miles) on the Eastern Shore. The remaining railroad will be placed out of service to due to lack of customers shipping.
